Gipsy Avenger completo in piedi, blu metallizzato con il reattore rosso sul petto

Gipsy Avenger: a metallic-blue Jaeger in an afternoon (more or less)

Project:

Pacific Rim’s Gipsy Avenger: assembly, an exposed reactor and a metallic blue that shifts with the light.

The Jaegers in Pacific Rim are giant robots piloted by two people, built to punch monsters the size of buildings. Gipsy Avenger is the heir of Gipsy Danger, and like all heirs it’s very keen to get noticed.

The heart

It starts with the torso, with the reactor in the middle of the chest: a red and gold disc that in the film is the robot’s beating heart. Everything around it is gunmetal grey.

The blue

The fun part is the armour colour: a metallic blue that shifts shade depending on how you look at it. Every part has to be painted separately and then assembled, hoping not to scratch it with your fingers.

Standing

One October day the Jaeger is on its feet, with its chain sword drawn. A week later, still on the table with the instructions, for details and decals.

Compared with other kits, it was a quick job. But with giant robots the rule is always the same: the hard part isn’t building them, it’s finding them a spot on the shelf.
